Elizabeth May should not run in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound

The National Post today contains an editorial criticizing the idea of Elizabeth May running in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound. Aside from the unfair jabs at Ignatieff and the Liberals, I agree with the jist of the article.

Conservative MP Larry Miller says it would be a poor decision for Green party leader Elizabeth May to run in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, as most area voters prefer someone local to represent them in Ottawa.

Local Liberal riding association president John Close had plenty of criticism to dish out when told yesterday about May's consideration of Bruce-Grey- Owen Sound for the next election.

"As a member of the constituency, I feel quite offended by parachute candidates. I think we should all be concerned," he said.

As someone who is represented by a part-time resident from Brampton, I know how much local representation suffers when your MP isn't even from your area. (On a side note, apparently nearly 75% of Clement's fundraising dollars in the last election came from outside the riding)

If Elizabeth May wants to run for office, she should run in Central Nova, where she is from, instead of using the people of Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound as stepping stones to advance her political career. Believe me, constituents in both ridings would be better off for it.
